“Wow.” Cain took off his baseball cap, scratched the back of his head and put the cap back on as he joined Samantha in the street. “Street cleaners will be earning their paycheck tomorrow.”

“Talk about giving new meaning to the phrase dirt road.”

Cain leaned out looking up and down the street. The destruction began just before their apartment building and extended up another three blocks. Mass confusion was everywhere and news crews were beginning to show up.

“Where’s your pick-up? Taz said to check out your pickup.”

“It’s up the street some, I couldn’t find a parking space. But I’m sure it’s fine.”

With a smirk, Samantha faced him. “Cain, look at this place. There are cars thrown up against buildings; do you really think your truck is unscathed?”

“Sure. Nothing bad ever happens to me.”

“Let’s go prove that theory wrong.” She held her hand forward. “Lead the way.”

“Sure. But wait, there’s something I want to talk to you about. It’s about what you just said to me in the….”

“Cain.” Taz ran up to him. “It’s about time. Hey, Sam. Come on up here and check out your truck.”

“I’m talking to Sam here, Taz.” Cain pointed with his hand then dusted off his bare chest as the slight breeze covered them with a dusty film.

“Talk later, come on.” Taz darted down the street.

With his hands on his hips, Cain faced Samantha. “Can we talk about it later?”

“About what?” She asked.

“About what you said.”

“What did I say? I didn’t say anything.” Samantha asked, beginning to move and follow Taz. She smiled.

“About…never mind.” Trotting, Cain caught up to her and laughed loudly when he got to his truck. He placed his face close to Samantha’s stunned one. “What’d I tell ya?” He nodded arrogantly at his shiny blue truck, still parked the way it was, the only vehicle on the street not moved. The only thing on the street not touched by dirt. In fact, an entire two foot radius around it was clear. “Good thing it’s like this, I just bought it last month.” He ran his hand down the side.

Samantha’s head swayed slowly. She saw what was around his truck. To the left, one car was flipped on its back. Directly in front of it, a Jeep perched upon its front end tilted against the hardware store. “How in the world?”

Taz answered for Cain. “It’s Cain, Sam. Didn’t he tell you nothing bad ever happens to him? Trust me, it doesn’t. And even if you and I think something bad has happened, he’ll tell you in which way it wasn’t bad.” Taz looked at his friend checking out his truck with a snicker every time he touched it. “He’s strange, Sam. Strange. Known him forever. Hey how’s your car?”

Samantha pointed backwards with her thumb. “My car is parked before the destruction.”

“Good thing. I bet you’re not as lucky as Cain. No one is.” Taz patted Cain on the back as he stood at the hood of the truck. “I’m heading back to work. Some of us are on duty.
